In 1899 a
two-volume book "The court of Catherine II, her cavaliers and servants.
189 silhouettes" went off the press. The book immediately became a
bibliographic rarity.
In the introductory article written by Alexander Krougly it
was said that Sidot created a famous silhouette of Catherine the Great
drawn from nature. It is called "The most pleasant shadow of Catherine
the Great, the Empress of Russia".
During the period of 224 years the silhouettes created by
F.G.Sidot did not loose their charm. They were the first silhouette
works, which became widely known in Russia. That is why the year of 1782
can be considered to be the year of birth of classic silhouette.
Let us admit that the year of
2007 (225 years of silhouette art in Russia) is not only a jubilee year,
but also a distinctive landmark in the history of this beautiful and
graceful art. In connection with this an international festival "The
Pleasant Shadow" is to be held in St-Petersburg.
