The presentation of newly created Sillhouette art department within the framework of Moscow museum of folk graphic art took place on June 24 of 2004. This is the first specialized department in the history of Russian museums, the activity of which is aimed at the development of silhouette art traditions.
Papercutting art has long and interesting traditions in Russia. Many methods and techniques were borrowed in the nineteenth century from Germany. Great Russian poets A.Pushkin and W.Zhukovsky were devoted admirers of silhouette art. At the turn of nineteenth and twentieth century an interesting and valuable contribution into silhouette art was made by the artists from the «World of Art» («Mir iskusstva») circle.
The organizers of the department enjoyed the kind assistance of the city administration of Moscow as well as of the management of Moscow school named after A.S.Pushkin.
The organizers of the Silhouette Department hope to convert this institution into a well-developed and active museum center uniting artists who work in silhouette techniques and all admirers of this kind of art.
