Zhou Family's Silhouettes of China
Paper-cutting is
an old traditional folk art. Chinese famous paper-cut artisans
Zhou Yunhua, Zhou Bing and their family members have shown great
talent in the field of paper-cutting. They participated in art
exhibitions at home and abroad many times, followed by excellent
reviews. All of their paper-cuts can be divided into three main
series: black, red, and blue. The black series is mainly of
Jiangnan local residences, ancient houses and gardens,
representing the typical scene of black tiles and white walls of
Jiangnan area, along with their miniature bridges and limpid
rivers, ever so peaceful and graceful. Prominent painter Xu Xi
remarked that it is ?°artwork of world-class?±. Besides these,
their new work Verve of the Forbidden City shows the agnificence
and imposing manner of Chinese Royal Palaces in a modern way. The
blue series is about Chinese ancient maids, Kwan-yin and the
creation of blue calico style likeness. All of them are simple
but elegant, full of folk flavor. The red series is of a more
joyful theme, as blossoms and flowers exquisitely and delicately
carved, to suit both refined and popular tastes. Their work has
won many gold metals at different Chinese exhibitions and has
been on display in other foreign countries, such as Japan,
Norway, Finland, France, America and Malaysia. With most of the
artwork created by the entire Zhou family, it has been suitably
named Zhou Paper-cutting. Zhou??s paper-cutting has developed the
traditional cutting skills and has also absorbed the techniques
of print and Chinese painting. Delicate and smooth cutting skills
enable the artwork to flow with lively rhythm and strong sense of
three-dimensional decorative beauty. We can say that their art is
of great artistic taste and enduring value.
